Solved: The Chicken and the Egg
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
The egg, and here’s why.
The common chicken is Gallus domesticus, and at some point it evolved from an ancestor—call it Gallus previous. Gallus previous and Gallus domesticus have different DNA. That’s how evolution works—random mutations in DNA provide an advantage and, given the right conditions, the mutation carries on through the generations as a new species.
This means that there was a time when a Gallus previous–who is not a chicken–laid an egg with the DNA of a chicken, Gallus domesticus. Ergo, first came the egg, then came the chicken.
